Blueberry

The blueberries belong to the Ericaceae family, Vaccinoiodae subfamily, Vaccinium genus. This baciform and globose fruit is juicy and has a bittersweet flavor.

The Vaccinium genus includes about 450 species, 40% of which are found in Asia and the Pacific, 26 in the North American subcontinent and 6 in Europe. Blueberry fruits, with many shapes and dimensions, have been harvested and consumed fresh or processed by man, since prehistory. The oldest traces were found in Bronze Age excavations in Denmark, in pieces of a clay pot that contained dehydrated traces of a drink or jam (porridge) which, after being analyzed, revealed to be composed of blueberries, bilberries (a cranberry blueberry), wheat flour and honey.
